3-D TV Sales to Blow Up in 2011 on Increasing Content, Falling Prices - IHS

Three-dimensional televisions, or 3-D TVs, should see surprising growth moving forward, according to data from IHS (NYSE: IHS) Thursday.

IHS sees sales charging ahead over 463 percent to 23.4 million units this year, from 4.2 million units sold in 2010. Shipments are also expected to double to around 54.2 million units in 2012.

The move should come as prices drop and 3-D content increases, two key factors that were missing at the introduction of the devices in 2010.

One IHS analyst noted brands are marketing 3-D TV not as a must-have but more as a desirable feature, just like the Internet. In that sense, the consumer will enjoy being able to switch between standard and 3-D views at a whim, slowly accustoming them to the change.

IHS believes LCD TVs will remain the go-to for most consumers, amounting to about 83 percent of the market.

Overall market share of 3-D TVs within the flat-panel market is expected to increase from 11 percent in 2011 to 22 percent next year. IHS suggests market shares will rise all the way to 52 percent by 2015.

Companies currently producing 3-D TVs include:
  • Panasonic (NYSE: PC)

  • Philips (NYSE: PHG)

  • Samsung (OTCBB: SSNLF)

    Toshiba (OTCBB: TOSBF)

  • Sony (NYSE: SNE)

  • LG
