October 7, 2024 6:10 AM EDT

By Sinéad Carew and Lisa Pauline Mattackal

(Reuters) -Wall Street's three major indexes closed down around 1% on Monday while Treasury yields rose, as traders tamped down bets for Federal Reserve interest-rate easing and worried about the Middle East conflict's impact on oil prices.

While waiting for quarterly earnings season and fresh economic data, investors also braced for another big hurricane, Milton, which is expected to hit the United States this week. Relief efforts are under way after Helene, a Category-4 hurricane, killed more than 200 people across six states.

October 4, 2024 9:29 AM EDT

By Ann Saphir

(Reuters) -A surge in U.S. job growth has financial markets betting the Federal Reserve will follow last month's half-point interest rate reduction with smaller moves, and ignited a debate over whether the policy rate ends up at a higher level than previously expected.

A Labor Department report on Friday showed employers added 254,000 jobs in September, far more than expected, and the unemployment rate declined to 4.1%.

Within minutes, traders of futures that settle to the Fed's policy rate had all but abandoned bets on another upsized interest rate reduction before the end... More

October 3, 2024 8:36 AM EDT

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased marginally last week, but the devastation unleashed by Hurricane Helene in the U.S. Southeast and strikes at Boeing and ports could distort the labor market picture in the near-term.

The report from the Labor Department on Thursday showed the labor market gliding at the end of the third quarter, a state of affairs that could allow the Federal Reserve to be in no rush to deliver large interest rate cuts. The economy also ended the third quarter on solid footing,... More
