Video Game US Sales Fall 8% in September

October 15, 2010 9:02 AM EDT
Sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 8 percent from the year earlier in September to $1.22 billion, according to researcher NPD Group.

The results were hampered by a 19 percent drop in the sales of hardware, and a 6 percent drop in software.

The bright spot of the month came from accessories, which was bolstered by the release of the Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) Move controller, which helped cause a tumble in the sales of hardware for Nintendo Co.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) said that it sold 484,000 Xbox 360 consoles last month, up 37 percent from the same quarter last year. The Xbox boon was created by a new "Slim" version of the unit and the release of the much anticipated "Halo: Reach" title, which sold 3.3 million copies in September.

Nintendo said that it sold 254,000 Wii consoles last month and 403,000 DC handheld units, compared to 462,800 and 524,200 respectively in the year-ago month.

Sony did not release sales of its consoles for September.

Video Game Stocks Following the Results:

GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) down 6 cents to $18.76

Microsoft Corp. up 12 cents to $25.35

Sony Corp. down 7 cents to $32.15

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) down 2 cents to $16.50
