Nokia (NYSE: NOK) could be headed higher following speculation of strong sale numbers in its most recent quarter.
CNET, citing a Sunday night report in the WSJ, said Nokia may have sold 8 million Lumia handsets in its most-recent quarter, up from 7.4 million devices the prior quarter. That's the fourth consecutive quarter of growth. The company is slated to report quarterly results on October 29th.
News comes as former Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, begins transition over to his new role as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) President. Market speculation has Elop as one of the potential choices as next Microsoft CEO and introducing a plan to expand and hone Microsoft's Windows Phone (WP8) operating system might be key in the board's decision.
Nokia will be debuting six new Lumia devices in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, which will include a WP8 tablet computer. The company and Microsoft announced a deal for Microsoft to acquire Nokia's Devices & Services unit a few months back.
Shares of Nokia are flat in early trading.
