'Ive' Got Some Bad News: Apple's (AAPL) Next iOS is Behind Schedule

April 3, 2013 9:15 AM EDT
Tuesday, production of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) next-generation iPhone was said to begin in the current quarter, with release of the device shortly thereafter. But, there might be a slight kink in the plans.

According to Daring Fireball's John Gruber, Apple is still trying to iron-out its next mobile operating system. Gruber said that iOS is running so far behind schedule that it is pulling engineers off of its OS X 10.9 line to work on it. (Yes, we assume that software engineers put together an operating system in the same manner as the Model T.)

Gruber also noted that iOS engineers have a special coating on their iPhone while the next iOS is in development so that it would be nearly impossible to see the screen when viewed from an angle.

On Jony Ive, Apple's SVP of Industrial Design, Gruber stated that he's heard similar rumors to what the Street is offering up. One observer is quoted as saying, "Ive’s work is apparently making many people really happy, but will also apparently make rich-texture-loving designers sad."

Shares of Apple are indicated for a higher open Wednesday.
