Why the program isn't called "iScan & Go" is beyond us.
According to reports out Wednesday, Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT) expanded a program which allows shoppers to scan items using an app built for use on an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone, iPod, or iPad, then pay for said items at self-checkout counters.
Today's news has the program being expanded into 12 new markets, Reuters notes. From 70 locations now Wal-mart soon hopes to put the service into 200 locations within months., including: Denver, Colorado; Phoenix, Arizona; Omaha, Nebraska; Dallas and Austin, Texas; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Wyoming; Bozeman, Montana; Seattle, Washington; San Jose, California; and Portland, Oregon.
Shoppers also will have the option to receive a digital receipt versus a paper one.
Currently, about 1,500 of Wal-mart's 4,000 U.S. locations have self-checkout lanes, though the company plan to double that number this year.
Along with the "Scan & Go" program, Wal-mart also hopes to introduce digital coupons soon.
Shares of Wal-mart are up on the session, while Apple is seeing a little pressure.
