SoundThinking adds auditing and evidence tools to PlateRanger LPR

October 23, 2026 8:31 AM EDT

SoundThinking, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSTI) announced new capabilities for its PlateRanger license plate recognition system, including evidence integrity features, outcome tracking, and expanded auditing tools, according to a company press release.

PlateRanger uses incident-based data retention technology, which allows law enforcement agencies to set different retention periods depending on the investigative relevance of a vehicle record. Routine plate reads can be automatically deleted after as few as two days, while records linked to stolen vehicles, AMBER Alerts, or other qualifying activity can be retained for 90 days or longer under agency-defined policies. Rekor Systems holds a U.S. patent for this differentiated retention approach, awarded in March 2026.

A forthcoming feature called GoSecure, designed for PlateRanger Edge Max cameras and cameras powered by Axis Agent, will cryptographically authenticate video at the point of capture. The company said the feature is intended to help investigators and prosecutors verify the integrity of digital evidence.

PlateRanger Outcomes, now available, connects license plate recognition alerts to documented results such as arrests, recovered vehicles, and cases assisted. An agency-wide dashboard allows supervisors to monitor the system's contribution to investigations.

Enhanced auditing capabilities provide agencies with visibility into administrative and configuration activity within the system, building on existing controls including role-based access, search justification requirements, and audit trails.

"The debate around license plate recognition is too often framed as public safety versus privacy. It doesn't have to be," said Ralph Clark, President and CEO of SoundThinking. "Routine vehicle data with no investigative relevance shouldn't be retained unnecessarily, while information tied to legitimate public safety needs should remain available to investigators."

Brian McNerney, Director of Public Safety for the City of Bellflower, California, said PlateRanger has helped the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identify vehicles involved in street racing while also allowing the agency to respect the privacy of residents not under investigation.

SoundThinking is presenting PlateRanger at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, from October 25 to 27, 2026.
