Extreme Networks previews on-premises AI infrastructure planned for 2027

October 21, 2026 7:05 AM EDT

Extreme Networks (NASDAQ: EXTR) has previewed a planned product called Extreme Exchange zones, an on-premises enterprise AI infrastructure designed to run AI applications locally at branch and edge sites. The company said it plans to make the product generally available in the first half of calendar year 2027.

According to the company, Exchange zones would allow enterprises to pool spare compute capacity from already-deployed access points and switches at distributed locations such as retail stores and warehouses. The system is designed to run AI models locally by default, with cloud inference available only when permitted by customer policy.

The product is aimed at organizations with data sovereignty requirements, operational resilience needs, or cost concerns related to sending large volumes of data to the cloud. Each zone would be bound to a single site in a single country and would log instances when data crosses defined boundaries.

Nabil Bukhari, CTO and President of AI Platforms at Extreme Networks, said in a statement: "Exchange zones will put that compute to work, letting AI run locally on infrastructure customers already own. That delivers sovereignty, local inferencing, and better economics than sending everything to the cloud."

Brandon Butler, IDC Senior Research Manager for Networking and Infrastructure Services, commented: "Exchange zones is an innovative approach that brings a marketplace of AI applications to customer premises, using spare capacity in existing network infrastructure to keep data local."

Extreme Exchange zones is described as one of five integrated layers in the company's enterprise stack, alongside its network infrastructure, Extreme Platform ONE, Extreme AI, and Extreme Agent ONE products.
