Collins Aerospace deploys new tower surveillance system at SBD airport

October 21, 2026 6:01 AM EDT

Collins Aerospace, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has launched its Tower MicroELITE (TME) surveillance solution, a digital display system designed to enhance situational awareness for air traffic controllers. San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) became the first facility to deploy the system, according to a company statement.

The TME system received FAA System Design Approval as an Airborne Position Reference Tool (APRT), making it eligible for deployment at FAA Contract Tower airports and privately operated air traffic control facilities.

The solution is built on Collins' FAA-certified Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) and uses commercial off-the-shelf hardware. The company says the system can be deployed at airports of varying sizes, including regional airports, general aviation reliever airports, business aviation terminals, and heliports.

San Bernardino International Airport operates as a federal contract tower, a category of facility that Collins described as a growing segment of private and contract airports facing increased traffic without certified radar displays.

"Tower MicroELITE delivers that clarity with an FAA-approved solution that's easy to integrate and scalable so operators can manage traffic demands with confidence," said Nicole White, vice president and general manager of Connected Aviation at Collins Aerospace.
