BlackBerry QNX royalty backlog surpasses $1.2 billion mark

October 20, 2026 7:02 AM EDT

BlackBerry Limited (NYSE: BB) announced that its QNX division has surpassed $1.2 billion in royalty backlog, an increase of more than $250 million, or about 26%, from the approximately $950 million reported at the end of fiscal year 2026.

The growth reflects increased customer adoption of QNX Software Development Platform 8.0 and the first design win for Alloy Kore, the company's automotive operating system. That design win is valued at more than $100 million in estimated future royalties, which BlackBerry described as the largest design win in QNX's history.

BlackBerry defines QNX royalty backlog as estimated future revenue from variable forecasted royalties, based on royalty rates and projected volumes derived from historical experience and current customer projections. The company noted that royalty backlog may not be indicative of actual future revenue, as recognized revenue depends on factors including actual production volumes and potential contract modifications or terminations.

The company said adoption of SDP 8.0 is tied to automakers consolidating vehicle functions onto centralized compute platforms, which it says allows QNX software to support multiple domains within a single vehicle. QNX said it is working with several global automotive original equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers on this platform.

Beyond automotive, BlackBerry said design wins in robotics, industrial automation, and medical devices also contributed to the backlog increase.

"In just two quarters, our backlog has grown by more than $250 million from the approximately $950 million we previously reported," said John Giamatteo, Chief Executive Officer of BlackBerry.

Royalty revenue is recognized once customer programs enter production and volumes increase, following an initial design win phase during which anticipated royalties are added to the backlog.
