Houthi strike on government camp in Yemen kills at least 20 fighters - AP
Investing.com - Iran-backed Houthi militants attacked a military camp in southern Yemen used by government forces on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
Citing Yemeni military officials, the AP said at least 20 soldiers were killed by the strikes, while at least two dozen were injured. The Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the al-Alam camp, where training had been conducted for police and security forces, the AP reported.
The head of Yemen’s ruling Presidential Leadership Council said new recruits from around the country were killed, vowing to carry out a “firm response,” the AP said.
A news agency run by the Houthis claimed the attack killed and wounded dozens, although no further details were provided, the AP noted.
The camp in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa is located a key supply route utilized by government forces.
Fighting in Yemen has intensified in recent weeks, as Saudi-aligned coalition government forces push to retake Houthi-controlled territory, including an area dominating alternative Saudi oil shipping routes through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The violence has spilled over into Saudi Arabia itself, with Houthis taking responsibility for attacks on infrastructure in the kingdom.
On Sunday, an airstrike connected to Saudi-led coalition forces killed at least nine people in Saada, a Houthi-held province in northern Yemen, the AP reported. The news agency said there was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia.
Yemen’s escalating war is itself a new front in an expanding Middle East conflict, which has grown since the start of a joint U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran in late February. Critical shipping conduits for regional oil, such as the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz, have been crimped, putting upward pressure on oil prices in the process.
