Some investors push Anthropic to cut IPO valuation to $1.5 trillion - report
Investing.com -- Some investors in Anthropic and potential participants in its upcoming initial public offering are considering a lower valuation for the artificial intelligence company following its latest financial disclosures, Reuters reported late Thursday.
Investors who attended Anthropic's investor day on Wednesday in San Francisco discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion, the report said. This represents a decrease from the roughly $2 trillion valuation that the company and investors had previously floated for the proposed November share sale.
At Wednesday's meeting, Anthropic told prospective IPO investors that its third-quarter revenue jumped 45% to $16.8 billion from the previous quarter. The company also reported it was profitable on an adjusted basis during the quarter.
Some investors expressed disappointment with the slowing sequential growth rate in the latest quarter, the report added. Anthropic's revenue more than doubled from the first quarter to $11.6 billion in the second quarter.
A tech selloff is affecting global financial markets and has impacted AI infrastructure companies, chipmakers and neocloud providers that rent computing power for AI. Shares and bonds of Nvidia-backed CoreWeave fell on Thursday.
During Wednesday's meeting at Anthropic's headquarters in San Francisco, attendees met with CEO Dario Amodei and finance chief Krishna Rao.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives including Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela Amodei, who is now Anthropic's president, Anthropic has developed its Claude family of models. Alphabet's Google and Amazon are investors, suppliers of computing power and distribution partners.
Last year, Anthropic's revenue increased twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion, while the company lost more than $8 billion on an operating basis, excluding writedowns of various liabilities mostly tied to previous fundraising. The company has committed to spending at least $518 billion over a decade for cloud services, computing and infrastructure.
