D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: QBTS) announced that its Advantage2 annealing quantum computer has arrived in Lombardy, Italy, for installation at Villa Saporiti in Como, according to a company press release.
The system, referred to within the Q-Alliance ecosystem as the VoltaB1, features more than 4,400 qubits. It was funded by Swiss Quantum Technology SA (SQT) under a €10 million agreement with D-Wave. Under that deal, SQT acquired 50% of the system's capacity for five years and holds an option to purchase the full system.
The computer is described by D-Wave as Italy's first annealing quantum computer. Once operational, it will be accessible through D-Wave's Leap cloud service and is intended to serve European researchers, universities and businesses.
A formal inauguration is scheduled for October 16 at Villa Saporiti as part of Q-Alliance's "Quantum per l'Italia" event. D-Wave CEO Dr. Alan Baratz is expected to deliver remarks at the ceremony, which will include representatives from research, industry and government.
"Bringing Italy's first annealing quantum computer to Como marks a historic milestone toward making quantum computing a working capability for Italian innovation and industry," said Dr. Baratz.
Thomas F. Darden, acting CEO of SQT, said the investment is intended to connect researchers and businesses with advanced computing resources and help build expertise in Italy's quantum sector.
The announcement was made at Digital Innovation Forum 2026. D-Wave previously signed the Volta Declaration at the World Tech Conference in Milan in June 2026, establishing a framework for cooperation on quantum computing, artificial intelligence and sovereign computing infrastructure.
