Sony Electronics announced the ECM-W5, a wireless microphone system aimed at video creators, with pre-orders opening October 14, 2026, and availability scheduled for November 2026.
The system includes two transmitters and one receiver, with a claimed line-of-sight transmission range of up to 500 meters. It supports 32-bit float audio recording at 48 kHz and 96 kHz high-resolution audio, transmitted digitally through Sony's Multi-Interface Shoe directly to a compatible camera, recording audio and video in a single file without a separate recorder.
Each transmitter includes up to 64 GB of built-in storage, capable of holding up to 90 hours of audio at 32-bit float/48 kHz or up to 60 hours at 24-bit/96 kHz as backup. Transmitter battery life is rated at up to 11 hours. The system is designed to reduce audio dropouts in congested radio-frequency environments and, according to Sony, offers approximately three times more stable transmission than its predecessor, the ECM-W3.
Compatible Sony wireless headphones can be used for cable-free monitoring or as wireless microphone inputs. The system supports up to four channels of in-camera audio recording and includes timecode functionality for multi-camera synchronization. A supplied USB Type-C adapter allows connection to compatible smartphones and PCs.
The transmitters and receiver are also sold separately. Pricing is as follows:
- ECM-W5 (full system): US $399.99 / CA $569.99
- ECM-W5R (receiver only): US $189.99 / CA $269.99
- ECM-W5T (transmitter only): US $119.99 / CA $169.99
Yang Cheng, Senior Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, said: "With the ECM-W5, we focused on the real workflow challenges creators face: moving freely, managing multiple voices, staying in sync, and protecting every take."
Sony Electronics is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America and an affiliate of Sony Group Corporation (Tokyo: 6758).
