Investing.com -- Albemarle Corp (NYSE: ALB) shares advanced 4% in Wednesday’s premarket session following an upgrade from Mizuho Securities, which cited accelerating demand for battery energy stationary storage as a catalyst for tighter lithium market balances. Analyst John Roberts raised his rating on the world’s largest lithium producer to Outperform from Neutral, while establishing a $130 price target that reflects a more bullish long-term pricing trajectory for the critical battery metal.
The bullish pivot centers on expanding demand from utility-scale energy storage projects, which is absorbing global supply faster than previously anticipated. Revised market forecasts from industry consultant Benchmark Minerals point to lithium carbonate prices reaching $22,500 per metric ton by 2027 and $19,500 per metric ton by 2028, representing significant upward revisions from prior projections of $18,375 and $14,500, respectively.
Mizuho noted that the surge in stationary storage requirements lifted projected 2027 demand by roughly 10%, while expected global supply and inventory drawdowns remained essentially unchanged. That widening supply-demand gap prompted the firm to raise its price forecasts for Albemarle’s core Energy Storage segment to $21,000 per metric ton in 2027 and $19,000 per metric ton in 2028.
Reflecting higher realization assumptions, Mizuho boosted its adjusted EBITDA estimates for the specialty chemicals provider to $3.2 billion in 2027 and $2.9 billion in 2028, up from $2.4 billion and $2.5 billion previously. As the industry's lowest-cost producer, Albemarle remains well positioned to convert higher market prices into expanding operating margins and stronger cash flow generation.
Against that backdrop, the company's fortified balance sheet provides downside protection during market downturns while preserving capital flexibility to reactivate growth projects as returns improve. Investors will likely track whether accelerating stationary storage deployment can offset ongoing volatility in consumer electric vehicle adoption over the coming quarters.
