Propanc Biopharma publishes pilot study on cancer proenzyme formula
Propanc Biopharma, Inc. (NASDAQ: PPCB) announced the publication of a peer-reviewed pilot study in Scientific Reports evaluating PRP, its proprietary combination of pancreatic proenzymes Trypsinogen and Chymotrypsinogen A at a 1:6 ratio, focused on pancreatic and ovarian cancer.
The study, published by Nature Publishing Group, tested PRP across 24 human cancer cell lines. The 1:6 ratio showed synergistic growth inhibition compared to other ratios tested. In orthotopic animal models, daily intravenous PRP produced an 85.9% reduction in mean tumor weight in a pancreatic model at the higher dose, and approximately 50% tumor-weight inhibition in an ovarian model across two dose levels.
The study also reported that PRP blocked tube formation related to angiogenesis, inhibited cell migration in wound-healing assays across pancreatic, ovarian, melanoma and colon cancer lines, and reversed markers associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in pancreatic and ovarian cells. No treatment-related adverse clinical events were observed in the animal models.
In a separate observational cohort of 46 patients with advanced, mostly metastatic cancers treated under the UK Specials Scheme using a rectal proenzyme formulation, 19 patients (41.3%) survived longer than their predicted life expectancy. Mean survival across the cohort was 9.0 months compared to a mean expected survival of 5.6 months (p < 0.05). No severe adverse events related to administration were reported.
"The data published in Scientific Reports provide clear evidence that our synergistic PRP formulation can inhibit key drivers of tumor progression—angiogenesis, invasion and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition—while delivering meaningful tumor growth suppression in relevant orthotopic models," said Dr. Ralf Brandt, Propanc's Research and Development Director.
Propanc states that PRP is designed as a long-term therapy targeting cancer stem cells, with initial target indications including pancreatic, ovarian and refractory prostate cancers. The company is based in Melbourne, Australia.
