OpenAI uses its own AI to help catch employee accused of planting office bug
Investing.com -- In a case that sounds more like an espionage thriller than a routine corporate security breach, OpenAI used its own artificial intelligence models to help investigate a hidden recording device planted in one of its offices, ultimately leading to an employee’s termination and an FBI investigation.
According to the company, its AI models helped analyze the hardware and trace the device to an employee who had allegedly planted it just days earlier.
OpenAI swiftly fired the employee and referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which subsequently made an arrest. The company thanked the federal agents and prosecutors involved, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.
Despite the unusual nature of the incident, OpenAI said it found no evidence that the individual had improperly accessed or removed highly sensitive information, including model weights, proprietary source code or customer data.
The episode offers an unusual example of AI being deployed beyond conventional digital tasks, with the technology helping investigators analyze physical hardware and identify a potential insider threat.
