OpenAI finds hidden recording device in office, employee arrested
OpenAI said it discovered a hidden recording device inside one of its offices and used its own AI models to help identify the source, determining that a specific employee had planted the device days earlier.
The company referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which made an arrest. OpenAI said it is grateful to the agents and prosecutors involved and that the FBI's investigation is ongoing.
OpenAI said it has found no indications that the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
According to a statement from the company, OpenAI used its AI models to understand the device and trace its origin to the employee.
