Leonardo DRS wins $63M U.S. Army order for thermal weapon sights

Leonardo DRS, Inc. (Nasdaq: DRS) announced it has received a $63 million production order from the U.S. Army for its Family of Weapon Sights – Individual (FWS-I) thermal weapon sight system, according to a company statement.

The order was placed under an existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract for thermal weapon sight systems supporting dismounted soldiers.

FWS-I is an uncooled thermal imaging system that wirelessly connects with soldier-worn vision devices, including the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle–Binocular (ENVG-B) and the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). The wireless link allows soldiers to view thermal imagery through helmet-mounted displays without shouldering their weapon.

The system uses a clip-on design intended to provide compatibility across multiple weapon platforms. It detects heat signatures in conditions where camouflage, lighting, or weather may limit traditional visual observation, including urban terrain, dense foliage, smoke, fog, and darkness.

"Modernization at the tactical edge depends on giving soldiers the information they need without adding unnecessary complexity," said John Baylouny, president and chief executive officer of Leonardo DRS.

Jerry Hathaway, senior vice president and general manager of Leonardo DRS Electro-Optical Infrared Systems, said the FWS-I "combines advanced uncooled thermal imaging with soldier-worn display integration to help improve target acquisition and situational awareness for dismounted soldiers."

Leonardo DRS is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and provides electro-optical and infrared technologies for mounted and unmounted operations, airborne platforms, and aircraft survivability.
