Kroger to cut over one-third of corporate workforce in major restructuring

October 12, 2026 4:48 PM EDT

Investing.com -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) has announced plans to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate positions over the next three years. The sweeping reduction is part of a broader strategic initiative led by Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran to streamline the grocery chain’s operations and enhance organizational agility.

The layoffs will impact 37% of Kroger’s 8,200 corporate employees across multiple departments, according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg News and Dow Jones. This restructuring marks one of the most substantial workforce overhauls in the grocer’s history.

Foran, a former Walmart Inc. executive who took the helm in February, communicated the decision during a company-wide address on Monday. The strategic pivot comes as the supermarket giant navigates a challenging macroeconomic landscape characterized by slowing growth, intensifying retail competition, and persistent inflationary pressures.

"Simplifying means making faster decisions and deploying more resources where they matter most," Foran wrote in the internal memo, noting that the company currently operates with excess organizational layers and overhead.

He emphasized the critical need to eliminate redundant workflows and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. Notably, Kroger is increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to optimize enterprise efficiencies and modernize its operational framework.

Specific details regarding the affected departments and roles will be disclosed in the coming months. Kroger stated that the capital freed by these corporate reductions will be strategically reinvested into lowering consumer prices, elevating the in-store shopping experience, and supporting its frontline associates.
