Richardson Electronics to install 5-MWh battery storage system in Illinois

October 12, 2026 1:25 PM EDT

Richardson Electronics, Ltd. (NASDAQ: RELL) and ComEd announced plans to install a 5-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system at Richardson's manufacturing facility in La Fox, Illinois, which the companies claim will be the largest commercial battery energy storage system in the state.

The project, described as a research and development demonstration, is supported by Illinois' Reimagining Energy and Vehicles (REV Illinois) program and ComEd's customer interconnection process. ComEd, a unit of Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), is providing engineering studies and site preparation assistance for the installation.

Richardson Electronics is also expanding its La Fox manufacturing operations to scale production of commercial battery energy storage systems. The company currently offers systems in several sizes, including 211-kWh, 422-kWh, and 760-kWh configurations for commercial use, developed through a partnership with Gotion Illinois.

"Our advanced energy storage solutions will help customers manage energy more efficiently while supporting a more reliable and resilient grid," said Greg Peloquin, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Richardson Electronics' Power & Microwave Technologies and Green Energy Solutions groups.

The initiative aligns with Illinois' Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act, which includes battery energy storage as a component of addressing forecasted energy supply shortfalls. ComEd's Distributed Generation Rebate Program, which recently reached a $350 million milestone, offers eligible customers rebates of up to $300 per kilowatt-hour of storage capacity for qualifying battery installations.
