Raytheon, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has completed three developmental tests of its Coyote Block 2C+RM interceptor upgrades, advancing the program from concept to testing in 15 months, according to a company statement.
The testing, funded by Raytheon, is aimed at supporting a U.S. military counter-drone mission. The Coyote Block 2C+RM upgrade is designed to integrate a rocket motor for faster launch and flight, along with a new seeker and warhead intended to counter current and emerging drone classes.
The initial test series included confirmation of integration with the existing counter-drone architecture and the first launches of a Coyote effector equipped with a tactical rocket motor. Raytheon said the rocket motor is intended to improve threat engagement times and enable faster successive shots.
The Coyote family of interceptors has previously been used to intercept hundreds of drones in combat, the company said.
"With a common backbone, Raytheon can rapidly scale the Coyote family across counter-drone missions — so we're accelerating the pace of innovation," said Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon. "Coyote Block 2C+RM is the latest example of how we're investing to deliver critical upgrades to combat-proven technology that give service members a decisive advantage on the battlefield."
