Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has unveiled a new missile interceptor called PAC-3 Edge™, designed to counter hypersonic and advanced missile threats, as part of the U.S. Army's Future Interceptor program, which is currently in competition.
According to a company statement, the Army has advanced Lockheed Martin to the next stage of development. The company plans to begin testing PAC-3 Edge in 2027, with rapid deployment targeted for 2031.
PAC-3 Edge is built on the existing PAC-3 MSE platform and incorporates a new seeker developed by Lockheed Martin's Strigo Product Center, into which the company said it has invested $250 million. The interceptor also features a multi-pulse solid rocket motor designed by Northrop Grumman, along with control system upgrades intended to extend performance at greater range and altitude.
Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said the interceptor delivers "greater maneuverability, power and velocity" compared to its predecessor.
The system is designed to integrate with existing U.S. Army infrastructure, including the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), the M903 launcher, containerized launchers, and HIMARS Flex.
