Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced commitments valued at $1 billion to expand U.S. capacity in scientific research and development over the next five years, with a focus on quantum computing, healthcare, and energy security.

The announcement was made at the Science: A New Golden Age event in Washington, D.C., where U.S. officials, industry leaders, and members of the science community gathered to discuss public-private collaboration in scientific research.

"With a $1 billion investment, Nvidia is putting advanced Super Intelligence in the hands of America's scientists to accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, energy and materials," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.

The commitments will be directed toward higher-education research institutions, acceleration of quantum computing initiatives, and support for cloud service providers serving U.S. government needs. Nvidia said it has also invited members of the science community to collaborate on research and development using its compute and infrastructure resources.

Nvidia is listed as a collaborator on several phase 2 Genesis Mission awards announced at the event, covering projects in quantum computing, fusion, accelerator design, and microelectronics. The U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy recognized Nvidia as a leading industry partner in the Genesis Mission program during the event.

The company has maintained partnerships with U.S. national laboratories for more than two decades. It previously announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy on the Genesis Mission, which includes building the department's largest supercomputer for scientific research at Argonne National Laboratory, as well as supporting seven additional systems across Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
