Kodiak AI and Charger USA begin autonomous trucking on Dallas-Laredo lane

October 8, 2026 9:01 AM EDT

Kodiak AI, Inc. (Nasdaq: KDK) and Charger USA, a cross-border carrier operating in the United States and Mexico, have launched an autonomous freight service on the 435-mile corridor between Dallas and Laredo, Texas, according to a company press release.

Trucks equipped with the Kodiak Driver autonomous driving system are hauling refrigerated and dry freight for consumer packaged goods and food and beverage customers. The companies completed their first delivery on Sept. 8, 2026. Operations currently include a safety driver behind the wheel, with a transition to driverless service planned once Kodiak completes its safety case.

The route marks Kodiak's first service to Laredo, which the company describes as the highest-volume commercial land port of entry in the United States. The Port of Laredo handled over $350 billion in international trade in 2025, representing nearly 40% of all U.S. trade with Mexico.

"Charger came to us knowing what they wanted from autonomy and what they need to see before scaling it," said Don Burnette, founder and CEO of Kodiak. "The Dallas–Laredo lane extends the Kodiak Driver into a new corridor, and gives both companies the operating foundation we need to scale driverless service."

Andy Khera, president of Charger USA, said the collaboration creates "a nearly fully automated ecosystem" combining Charger's transportation management system with the Kodiak Driver.

Kodiak operates under a Driver-as-a-Service model, deploying its autonomous system on trucks owned and operated by customers. The company has operated driverless commercial service in the Permian Basin since December 2024.

Kodiak stated its long-haul Autonomy Readiness Measure reached 96% at the end of September 2026, and the company plans to launch long-haul driverless service by the end of 2026. The two companies also indicated plans to expand the collaboration to additional lanes in Charger's network over time.
