Investing.com -- Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE: DVN) shares advanced 2.6% in early trading Thursday after agreeing to sell its Eagle Ford assets to Crescent Energy Co. for $4.2 billion in cash. The transaction allows the company to divest a mature footprint while directing proceeds toward debt reduction and accelerated share repurchases.
The divested assets cover roughly 90,000 net acres across Karnes, DeWitt, and Gonzales counties in Texas, accounting for approximately 4% of Devon's total production. Executive leadership noted that the sale price surpassed the company's internal hold case, driven by multi-year productivity gains and a supportive commodity price backdrop.
Proceeds from the deal are slated to strengthen the balance sheet and bolster capital return initiatives on a per-share basis. Furthermore, removing the mature Texas acreage lowers Devon's corporate breakeven costs and slows its overall production decline rate.
The deal builds on a series of recent strategic maneuvers designed to sharpen the producer's focus on its core, higher-margin operations in the Delaware Basin. These prior moves included a combination with Coterra Energy, inventory expansion through federal lease acquisitions, and midstream infrastructure investments along the Solitude pipeline.
The transaction carries an effective date of July 1, 2026, and is expected to close near the end of the year, subject to regulatory clearances. Devon plans to outline updated operational and financial guidance alongside its third-quarter earnings report on November 5.
