Mizuho Securities and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) announced that Mizuho Securities will deploy an HPE Cray XD2000 system featuring direct liquid cooling to support financial simulations that involve more than 360 million calculations per day.
To accommodate the new system's cooling requirements and allow for future expansion, Mizuho Securities is building a new data center designed for liquid cooling. Installation of the liquid cooling equipment, network buildout, and operational validation will begin this fall, with the system scheduled to go into production in mid-2027.
The initial deployment will comprise eight server nodes, with Mizuho Securities planning to expand the number of servers and racks in stages. The company also plans to explore GPU-accelerated compute for a future private AI infrastructure.
According to the companies, the HPE Cray XD2000 in a direct liquid cooling configuration delivers up to 20% performance improvement per kilowatt compared with air-cooled solutions and consumes 15% less power, based on internal HPE testing conducted in April 2023. Mizuho Securities expects 1.6 times the performance per server node compared with its current environment, which includes HPE Apollo 2000 and HPE ProLiant systems.
Mizuho Securities' Global Markets department provides customers in Japan and internationally with financial products and services including bonds, equities, and derivatives. The company said simulations for derivatives pricing and quantification of market and counterparty credit risk account for the more than 360 million daily calculations, a volume it said increases each year.
HPE Services will provide monitoring and maintenance support, including real-time visibility into the operating status of the direct liquid cooling and power infrastructure, as well as automated coolant leak alerts.
HPE's senior vice president and managing director for HPE Japan, Hirokazu Mochizuki, said Mizuho Securities is the first in Japan's financial sector to select the HPE Cray XD2000 featuring direct liquid cooling.
