Investing.com -- Truist analysts attended the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference this week, where the National Marine Manufacturers Association indicated that major market indicators remain in "caution" and "trouble" categories.
The NMMA projects 2026 new powerboat retail sales to decline 3% to 5% year-over-year, marking the sixth consecutive year of falling sales. A senior industry leader described marine market uncertainty as the highest in his career.
Trouble indicators primarily related to consumer health, including personal debt, consumer confidence, and interest rates. The association noted that most boat buyers are credit-sensitive. Marine dealer inventories were placed in the caution category.
Live polling of hundreds of attendees at the conference showed nearly 60% identified stronger consumer confidence as the economic improvement that would provide the biggest boost to boating, followed by approximately 20% citing lower interest rates. Most attendees expect inflation to rise in 2027.
The firm noted concerns within the industry that marine sales may follow the trajectory of RV sales in terms of negative growth severity. Industry participants also expressed worry that the average boater age has increased to 60 from 45, indicating difficulty attracting younger consumers.
Truist met with Patrick Industries (NASDAQ: PATK) management and toured the company's booth. The firm noted PATK's expanded presence at the show, with one of the largest displays at the event, bringing multiple acquired companies together in one area for the second consecutive year.
PATK management stated the company aims to help original equipment manufacturers with cost challenges and plans to work with OEMs on end-to-end solutions in 2027.
