Pfizer to cut 330 jobs at Sicily plant, unions say

October 7, 2026 10:28 AM EDT

Investing.com -- Pfizer Inc plans to eliminate approximately 330 positions at its Sicily facility in Italy, labor unions announced on Wednesday. The cuts represent about 60% of the plant's current workforce of 550 employees.

Negotiations between Pfizer and Italy's industry ministry on Tuesday evening in Rome did not produce an agreement, according to a joint statement from the CGIL, CISL and UIL unions.

Italy's industry ministry stated that issues discussed during the meeting would form the basis for continued dialogue. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso is scheduled to visit the Sicily plant on October 23, with additional talks between Pfizer and the ministry planned for November 10.

Pfizer has not yet made a formal announcement.

The job cuts add to a series of workforce reductions by international companies operating in Italy. Earlier this week, appliance manufacturer Electrolux announced a revised restructuring plan for its Italian operations that will affect around 1,250 workers.

Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson said on Monday it would abandon a planned collective layoff of 131 workers in Genoa and instead pursue a voluntary restructuring program following discussions with the ministry.
