Global Ship Lease, Inc. (NYSE: GSL) announced it has exercised options to build two additional mid-size containerships at an aggregate contract price of approximately $163 million, according to a company press release.
The two vessels are described as ultra-high-reefer, wide-beam, latest-generation containerships scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2029. With the addition of these ships, the company's newbuilding orderbook grows to 17 vessels. Global Ship Lease said it is in discussions with prospective charterers regarding employment of the ships upon delivery.
Executive Chairman George Youroukos said in a statement: "By exercising these additional newbuild options, we are very pleased to be growing our exposure to this increasingly valuable vessel class on attractive terms agreed earlier this year and at prices no longer available in the market for comparably specified ships with 2029 deliveries."
As of June 30, 2026, Global Ship Lease operated a fleet of 71 containerships with an average age of 18.4 years weighted by TEU capacity. The fleet included 15 newbuilding containerships under construction with scheduled deliveries between the fourth quarter of 2028 and the first quarter of 2030.
The company reported contracted revenue of $3.2 billion as of June 30, 2026, based on a TEU-weighted average remaining charter term of 3.3 years. Including options under charterers' control, contracted revenue was $4.1 billion, representing a weighted average remaining term of 4.4 years.
