Xanadu and GlobalFoundries partner on quantum photonics manufacturing
Xanadu Quantum Technologies (NASDAQ/TSX: XNDU) and GlobalFoundries announced a multi-year partnership aimed at scaling the production of photonic components for quantum computing, according to a press release dated Oct. 6, 2026.
The collaboration will focus on manufacturing ultra-low loss silicon nitride photonics and Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors, known as SNSPDs, through GlobalFoundries' 300 mm production line in Malta, New York. The partnership is intended to move Xanadu's photonic components from laboratory-scale prototyping to industrial-grade production.
SNSPDs are the photon number resolving technology Xanadu has selected for its utility-scale quantum computing systems. The company said the adoption of SNSPDs is expected to increase the speed of its quantum computing systems and reduce chip overheads required for its photonic architecture.
The two companies said they are also exploring additional work packages to develop high-performance quantum modules. The output of the partnership is expected to support Xanadu's fault-tolerant demonstrators and its longer-term objective of providing hardware for quantum data centers.
"Transitioning quantum computing technology to a high-volume manufacturing line is fundamental to delivering quantum computing at scale," said Dr. Christian Weedbrook, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xanadu.
Nicholas Sergeant, VP of Quantum Technology Solutions at GlobalFoundries, said the partnership "creates a path to industrialize the critical components needed to accelerate the deployment of fault-tolerant systems."
Xanadu, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Toronto, develops photonic quantum computing hardware and software, including its open-source platform PennyLane. GlobalFoundries operates semiconductor manufacturing facilities across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
