Meta and Microsoft scale back internal use of Anthropic’s Claude, report says

Investing.com -- Tech giants Meta Platforms and Microsoft are actively reducing their internal reliance on Anthropic’s Claude AI technology as both companies steer employees toward their own in-house artificial intelligence tools, according to a recent report by The Information.

Earlier this year, Microsoft projected an internal spend of at least $1 billion on Anthropic’s technology, according to sources familiar with the company’s budget. However, that estimate has since been slashed by more than a third. To rein in operating costs, leadership has reportedly asked staff to curb their Claude usage and instead utilize Microsoft’s proprietary AI offerings.

Notably, this reduction applies exclusively to internal operations; customer spending on Anthropic models via Microsoft’s enterprise platforms continues to see steady growth.

Meta is experiencing a similar internal shift. Usage of Anthropic’s coding assistant, Claude Code, recently dropped to roughly 30,000 employees—down from approximately 60,000 earlier this year. While spring layoffs that impacted about 10% of Meta’s 78,000-person workforce contributed to this decline, the primary driver is the company’s aggressive push to develop its own AI ecosystem.

The rapid advancement of Meta’s proprietary AI coding tools and its Muse Spark line of models has largely displaced the need for Claude. In August, the company began external testing for Muse Code, a direct Claude Code competitor powered by Meta’s models, which recently tallied over 6,000 internal users. Meanwhile, MetaCode—a similar tool built exclusively for internal use—has already surpassed 30,000 users.
