Leonardo DRS completes thermal sight delivery to Australian Army

October 5, 2026 4:03 PM EDT

Leonardo DRS, Inc. (Nasdaq: DRS) has completed the final delivery and training for Improved Night/Day Observation Device (INOD) Block III thermal weapon sights supplied to the Australian Army under the LAND 159 Tranche 1 program, according to a company statement.

The INOD Block III is a clip-on thermal weapon sight designed for snipers and special operations forces. It mounts in front of an existing direct-view optic and is compatible with magnifications from 5x to greater than 25x. The system uses a micro-cooled, 640-by-480 mid-wave infrared focal plane array and supports operation in low-light conditions including darkness, smoke, haze, and adverse weather.

The device runs on lithium batteries with hot-swap capability, allowing battery replacement without interrupting operation, and can connect to external power for extended static-surveillance tasks.

"Completing delivery and training for the Australian Army is an important milestone for our team," said Jerry Hathaway, senior vice president and general manager of the Leonardo DRS Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems business unit.

Australian defense company NIOA served as prime contractor for the LAND 159 Tranche 1 program and managed local coordination and delivery logistics. Leonardo DRS provided hands-on training to Australian Army personnel covering operation and maintenance of the systems.

The INOD Block III is also fielded with U.S. Army Special Operations Forces. Leonardo DRS describes the INOD family as part of a broader thermal sighting portfolio that includes the Family of Weapon Sights program.
