AstraZeneca (LSE/STO/NYSE: AZN) has opened a new global research and development center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, marking an expansion of the company's presence in the state.

The facility at 290 Binney Street spans 570,000 square feet across 18 stories and includes ten floors of laboratories. The site is designed to house nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists, alongside the company's existing genomic medicine site at 100 Binney Street. The center will focus on oncology, cell therapy, chronic disease, and rare disease research.

AstraZeneca said the center incorporates robotics, continuous automation, and artificial intelligence technologies. Research areas will include treatments for COPD, obesity, metabolic disease, breast cancer, and rare diseases.

The opening is part of AstraZeneca's stated $1 billion investment in Massachusetts, which the company said will grow its workforce in the state by more than 50% over the coming years. This investment is part of a broader $50 billion commitment to the United States.

Chief Executive Officer Pascal Soriot said: "Kendall Square is a leading innovation ecosystem, and it is one of the key locations where AstraZeneca will discover the next generation of scientific breakthroughs."

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said the investment is "a major vote of confidence in Massachusetts and the extraordinary talent we have here."

AstraZeneca currently employs more than 25,000 people in the United States across 24 sites and operates R&D centers in more than 40 countries, including another US-based global strategic research center in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
