Granite (NYSE: GVA) announced that the Granite-Super Joint Venture, a partnership between Granite and Super Excavators, has been awarded a $324.8 million contract by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) for the Big Creek Tunnel project in Cleveland, Ohio.

The contract will be included in Granite's third-quarter construction activity pipeline. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026 and is expected to be completed in winter 2030.

The project is part of NEORSD's Project Clean Lake, a $3 billion, 24-year program launched in 2011 to improve water quality in the region. The Big Creek Tunnel is described as the last of seven large-diameter combined sewer overflow storage tunnels under the program.

Granite's scope of work includes construction of 22,300 linear feet of 20-foot-diameter tunnel and 3,115 linear feet of ancillary tunnels, including adits, an overflow tunnel, a connecting tunnel, and a dewatering tunnel. Major structures include multiple shafts, diversion structures, gate and screening structures, gate control vaults, consolidation sewers, and an overflow box culvert, along with associated sitework, restoration, and utilities.

According to the company, the completed project will eliminate 550 million gallons of combined sewer releases annually.

"The scale and complexity of this project align directly with Granite's strengths in large-diameter tunneling and shaft construction," said Granite Tunnel Division VP Jim Nickerson. "This is a major wastewater infrastructure project, and it will strengthen system performance and protect local waterways across Northeast Ohio."
