Inspire Medical Systems (NYSE: INSP) announced that the American Medical Association's CPT Editorial Panel has approved a new set of Current Procedural Terminology codes for hypoglossal nerve stimulation, including the company's Inspire V system. The new Category I codes are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2028.
The codes cover the implantation of a single lead and an implantable pulse generator, addressing procedures performed with the Inspire V system and other single-lead hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapies.
"This new CPT code language addresses the implantation of a single lead and an implantable pulse generator including our recently launched Inspire V system," said Tim Herbert, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Inspire Medical Systems. "We appreciate the AMA creating dedicated codes that will create a clearer, more consistent path for coding and reimbursement, which we expect will reduce administrative burden for hospitals and physicians and support continued growth in patient access to Inspire therapy."
The application received support from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the International Surgical Sleep Society.
With the codes established, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will begin its standard process to determine payment values under Medicare. CMS is expected to publish proposed valuations in July 2027, with final valuations anticipated in November 2027. The agency typically requests the AMA Relative Value Scale Update Committee to review new codes, with specialty societies potentially surveying their members to inform recommendations.
The Minneapolis-based company states it has treated more than 140,000 patients and has over a decade of clinical experience in obstructive sleep apnea treatment.
