Florida sues Pfizer over Covid-19 vaccine safety claims
Investing.com -- Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit on Thursday against Pfizer and its Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla. The suit accuses the pharmaceutical company of misleading consumers about the safety and effectiveness of its Covid-19 vaccine.
The lawsuit, filed in state court, alleges that Pfizer told consumers its Covid-19 vaccine was safe while failing to disclose potential risks, including heart inflammation and other adverse events.
According to the complaint, Pfizer encouraged people to get the vaccine to protect others, even though the company never tested whether the vaccine stopped the virus from spreading.
Florida also accused Pfizer of using unfair tactics to dominate the market. The state said the company made more than $80 billion from vaccine sales, then raised the price of the vaccine nearly four times to a range of $110 to $130 per dose in 2023 from $30.
The state is suing under its consumer protection law and seeks a court order to stop the alleged conduct. Florida is also requesting fines of $10,000 per violation, or $15,000 when seniors or disabled people were harmed, and the return of profits.
Pfizer shares traded roughly 1% lower on Thursday.
