Sophia Space and Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore collaboration on scalable computing infrastructure in orbit, the companies announced Sept. 30.
Under the agreement, the two companies will combine Sophia Space's modular TILE compute architecture with Redwire's capabilities in deployable space systems, solar power generation, heat management, spacecraft integration, avionics, and systems engineering.
Sophia Space's TILE architecture is designed to integrate high-performance computing, solar power, and passive radiative thermal management into systems intended for artificial intelligence inference, data processing, and other compute-intensive workloads in orbit.
The MOU covers near-term demonstration missions as well as longer-term orbital data center architectures. The companies also intend to jointly pursue U.S. government and commercial opportunities, including potential programs involving DARPA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Space Development Agency, and the National Reconnaissance Office.
"We're past the point of asking whether high-performance computing belongs in orbit," said Rob DeMillo, CEO and co-founder of Sophia Space. "The question now is how quickly we can scale it."
Al Tadros, Chief Technology Officer of Redwire Space, said the companies aim to "build next-generation architectures that could unlock significant economic value."
Areas of potential collaboration include concept development, joint proposals, internal research and development, customer engagement, and international market opportunities.
