EnerSys targets 2027 launch for new broadband edge power system

September 29, 2026 8:06 AM EDT

EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) has announced development progress on the Alpha XM Edge, a new outside plant power system for cable broadband networks, according to a company press release.

The system uses a digital switch-mode architecture, with a design target of up to 96% peak efficiency, subject to completion of product validation and qualification. The company says this represents an improvement over earlier ferro-resonant platforms across a broad operating range.

The Alpha XM Edge is being developed with four stated priorities: power-conversion efficiency, simpler field service through modular and field-replaceable components, greater operational visibility via embedded sensing and planned mobile- and web-based diagnostics, and configurable adaptability to support a range of outside plant requirements.

Validation testing covers power-conversion efficiency, line-to-standby transfer, protection behavior under surge and short-circuit conditions, modular serviceability, and field diagnostics. Expanded customer field evaluations are planned for fall 2026.

EnerSys is displaying a development-stage unit at SCTE TechExpo26, held September 29 through October 1, 2026, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

The company targets limited commercial availability in spring 2027, followed by broader availability in summer 2027, contingent on successful completion of development, validation, qualification, and production-readiness activities.

"Broadband operators are asking more of the network edge while managing rising energy costs and field-resource constraints," said John Hewitt, Vice President, Communications Americas, Network & Infrastructure Solutions at EnerSys. "The Alpha XM Edge power system is being designed to address those demands through higher conversion efficiency, simpler serviceability and greater visibility into system performance. We are validating those capabilities before bringing the system to market."
