Nasdaq (NASDAQ: NDAQ) launched an agentic AI operating environment within its Nasdaq Calypso capital markets and treasury platform on Sept. 29, 2026, designed to allow financial institutions to run and connect AI agents across trade lifecycle workflows.
The environment is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard for linking AI agents to software. It allows clients to access Nasdaq Calypso's agents and connect their own AI infrastructure through an integrated layer. The system applies sandboxing with no external data retention and live oversight, intended to keep AI agents within an institution's policies and data perimeter.
The launch includes an initial natural language assistant that lets users query the platform's trading, risk, and collateral data, as well as documentation. Nasdaq said it plans to release additional agentic workers aimed at reducing manual processes across capital market workflows.
The agents will be hosted by Nasdaq and delivered through a cloud environment built on Amazon Bedrock. On-premises clients will also be able to connect to the agents.
"For institutions to adopt AI agents at scale, they need a trusted, governed infrastructure inside the capital market platforms they already run," said Magnus Haglind, Head of Capital Markets Technology at Nasdaq. "By integrating agentic capabilities and serving as the orchestration layer, we are evolving Nasdaq Calypso from a system of record into an intelligent platform that automates activity at every stage of the trade lifecycle."
A survey conducted by Nasdaq and Acuiti found that nearly half of respondents cited manual intervention as a challenge in post-trade operations, and 56% said they risk losing competitive ground without integrating AI or machine learning into clearing operations.
Nasdaq Calypso serves banks, brokers, asset managers, and central banks. The agentic launch follows similar AI deployments across other Nasdaq platforms, including Nasdaq Verafin, which has an agentic AI workforce used by more than 800 clients, and AI-powered regulatory reporting in Nasdaq AxiomSL.
