MaxLinear launches Puma 9 DOCSIS chip with Wi-Fi 8 and AI support

September 28, 2026 8:40 AM EDT

MaxLinear, Inc. (Nasdaq: MXL) announced the Puma 9, a new semiconductor platform designed to support DOCSIS 3.1, 3.1+, and 4.0 broadband standards on a single system-on-chip built on 8nm process technology.

According to the company, Puma 9 can reduce customer premises equipment costs by 30% to 50% compared with alternative DOCSIS 4.0 solutions. The chip supports in-field software upgrades, allowing operators to transition between DOCSIS standards without replacing hardware.

The platform includes Wi-Fi 8 integration, an AI-processing unit branded as MaxAI, post-quantum cryptography readiness, and compatibility with DDR5 memory. MaxLinear claims Puma 9 is the only DOCSIS platform currently supporting DDR5. The chip is designed to comply with cybersecurity frameworks including NIST IR 8425A, the EU Radio Equipment Directive, and the Cyber Resilience Act.

In a DOCSIS 3.1+ configuration using five OFDM channels, Puma 9 supports up to 12 Gbps downstream throughput, according to the company.

Gateway manufacturers Askey and Gemtek said they are developing next-generation products on the Puma 9 platform. Fritz! said it plans to evaluate the chip in its lab. Mediacom Communications said it is reviewing the platform for potential use in its network.

"Operators can now deploy DOCSIS 4.0-ready equipment today without expanding their CPE budget allocation," said Puneet Sethi, SVP and GM of MaxLinear's Network Infrastructure and Carrier Business Unit.

A Dell'Oro Group forecast cited in the press release projects that DOCSIS 4.0 and fiber expansion spending will enter a new cycle peaking in 2028.

Puma 9 is currently available to broadband operators and OEM partners. Additional product and partner announcements are expected throughout 2026.
