Moody’s raises BJ’s Wholesale outlook to positive on debt reduction

September 25, 2026 4:27 PM EDT

Investing.com -- Moody’s Ratings has revised its outlook on BJs Wholesale Club Holdings Inc (NYSE: BJ) to positive from stable, signaling that the warehouse retailer’s consistent operational execution and conservative debt profile could soon pull it into investment-grade territory. Alongside the outlook shift, the rating agency affirmed BJ's Corporate Family Rating at Ba1 and upgraded its speculative-grade liquidity rating to SGL-1, citing a robust financial buffer backed by a $1.2 billion asset-based revolving credit facility.

The credit action reflects BJ's resilient business model, which relies heavily on high-margin membership fees and essential grocery sales to drive steady earnings growth. Moody's highlighted that the Marlborough, Massachusetts-based company has maintained a balanced financial policy, keeping leverage targeted below 1.0x net debt to adjusted EBITDA while preparing to transition toward an unsecured capital structure in the near term.

Strong operational performance and disciplined debt reduction have significantly strengthened the retailer's balance sheet over the past year. For the 12 months ended August 1, 2026, BJ's generated approximately $23 billion in revenue across its 267 locations, pushing its Moody's-adjusted debt-to-EBITDA leverage down to 1.8x and lifting its EBIT-to-interest coverage to 4.9x.

The rating agency noted that BJ's strategic investments in digital capabilities, private-label expansion, and category repositioning have reinforced its value proposition against a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. A formal upgrade to an investment-grade rating will depend on BJ's sustaining leverage below 3.0x, maintaining coverage near 4.0x, and successfully executing its capital structure transition.
