Moody’s upgrades Brinker to Ba1 on Chili’s growth and debt reduction

September 25, 2026 4:26 PM EDT

Investing.com -- Moody's Ratings has upgraded Brinker International Inc's (NYSE: EAT) corporate family rating to Ba1 from Ba2, citing sustained operational momentum and disciplined debt reduction across its core casual dining footprint. The credit agency simultaneously assigned a stable outlook to the parent company of Chili’s Grill & Bar and Maggiano’s Little Italy, while maintaining its top-tier SGL-1 speculative grade liquidity rating.

The rating action reflects a successful operational turnaround at Chili's, where consistent same-store sales growth and traffic outpaced the broader U.S. restaurant sector despite persistent macroeconomic headwinds. Coupled with balance sheet deleveraging, this strong top-line performance helped push Brinker's adjusted debt-to-EBITDA down to roughly 1.7x for its fiscal year ended June 2026, while EBIT-to-interest coverage surpassed 5.75x.

Brinker’s strategic push into product innovation, targeted technology upgrades, and operational execution has effectively insulated its primary restaurant chains from softening consumer discretionary spending. However, Moody's noted that the company remains structurally constrained by its elevated earnings concentration in Chili's, which requires continuous core-brand growth to balance ongoing sector-wide cost inflation.

The newly assigned stable outlook assumes that management will uphold balanced financial policies, prioritizing growth investments and share repurchases funded strictly through organic cash generation. Analysts expect Brinker to maintain robust liquidity and conservative leverage metrics as it navigates shifting consumer dining patterns.

Further credit upgrades would hinge on sustained operational improvements at Maggiano’s, a formal commitment to an investment-grade capital structure, and maintaining adjusted leverage below 2.5x over the long term. Conversely, Moody's signaled that any significant operational deterioration or aggressive financial policies pushing leverage above 3.0x could trigger negative rating actions.
