VinFast launches certified pre-owned program for used EVs in Canada

September 25, 2026 6:01 AM EDT

VinFast has launched a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program in Canada, transferring the unused portion of its original 10-year/200,000-km vehicle warranty to subsequent owners, according to a company statement.

CPO vehicles under the program undergo a 105-point inspection that includes battery-health checks, and come with a Carfax vehicle history report and 24/7 roadside assistance. VinFast began delivering its first Canadian VF 8 vehicles in June 2023 and offers a separate 10-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty on high-voltage batteries.

The announcement comes as Canada's used EV market shows increased activity. Data from Clutch indicated that used EVs sold in a median 23 days in July, a record for the category and faster than used gasoline vehicles.

Charging cost data cited from Rates.ca found that a compact EV required approximately $448 per year in charging costs based on 20,000 km of annual driving in Ontario, compared with $2,523 for a comparable gasoline sedan. For an electric SUV, the annual charging estimate was $616 versus $3,487 for a comparable gasoline model.

On repair costs, auto claims technology firm Mitchell reported in its second-quarter study that the average repairable battery-electric vehicle claim in Canada was $6,645, compared with $5,411 for an internal combustion engine vehicle — a gap of $1,234, which Mitchell described as the narrowest it has recorded.

Battery longevity data cited in the release includes a Geotab analysis of nearly 5,000 EVs showing average battery degradation of 1.8% per year. A separate study published in Nature Energy, drawing on millions of UK vehicle records, estimated an average lifespan of 18.4 years for battery-electric vehicles and a lifetime mileage of approximately 124,000 miles.
