Surescripts and Oracle Health announced a partnership to integrate Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation into the Oracle Health clinical workflow, with general availability planned for 2027, according to a press release from Surescripts.
The tool automatically retrieves clinical data from a patient's electronic health record and submits it electronically to the pharmacy benefit manager at the time of prescribing. When prior authorization criteria are met, the request can be approved without human intervention. The company states a median approval time of 18 seconds for eligible medications when all criteria are satisfied.
The two companies also said they plan to explore adding Surescripts First-Fill Abandonment to Oracle Health workflows. That tool monitors new prescriptions sent across the Surescripts network and flags cases where patients do not pick up their medications at the pharmacy, allowing providers to intervene earlier.
A 2025 survey by the American Medical Association found that 95% of physicians said the prior authorization process sometimes delays care, and 79% said it at least sometimes leads to treatment abandonment.
"When a prior authorization is resolved in seconds instead of days, it can make the difference between a patient starting treatment on time or not at all," said Frank Harvey, chief executive officer of Surescripts.
Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, said the integration "reduces the administrative burden for caregivers and enables care teams to help patients access medications faster."
Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) is a publicly traded company. Surescripts is a privately held healthcare technology company based in Arlington, Va.
