Investing.com -- Moody's Ratings has affirmed Baidu Inc (NASDAQ: BIDU) A3 issuer and senior unsecured ratings, but revised its rating outlook to negative from stable as heavy artificial intelligence capital expenditures weigh on cash flow and leverage. The outlook adjustment reflects the Chinese tech giant's subdued top-line expansion, narrowing profit margins, and execution risks tied to monetizing AI services while simultaneously stabilizing its core search advertising business amid fierce domestic competition.
Despite the outlook downgrade, the affirmation of the A3 rating underscores Baidu’s substantial liquidity reserve, which offers a key cushion during its ongoing strategic transition. Moody's Senior Vice President Shawn Xiong highlighted that while aggressive capital deployment into AI infrastructure has strained short-term credit metrics, the company's strong net cash position provides crucial financial flexibility over the next 12 to 18 months.
The aggressive pivot toward AI infrastructure drove capital expenditures to RMB17 billion in the first half of 2026, up sharply from RMB7 billion in the prior-year period. This elevated spend pushed free cash flow into negative territory and raised total adjusted debt to RMB113 billion, driving Baidu’s adjusted debt-to-EBITDA ratio up to 3.3x from 2.5x at the end of 2025.
Looking ahead, Moody's expects financial leverage to remain elevated between 3.3x and 3.5x over the next 12 to 18 months, with adjusted EBITDA margins compressing to the 26% to 27% range as lower-margin AI revenue replaces historically lucrative search advertising. However, with RMB166 billion in cash and short-term investments against just RMB34 billion in near-term debt maturities, Baidu retains ample liquidity to fund its capital expenditure obligations while pursuing operational recovery.
