New Jersey American Water names two government affairs leaders

New Jersey American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), has appointed Fred DeAndrea as director of Government Affairs and promoted Sakeema M. James to senior manager of Government Affairs, according to a company press release.

DeAndrea brings more than 20 years of public policy and external affairs experience to the role. He most recently served as senior director of government and community affairs for New Jersey at Comcast. Earlier in his career, he worked as a district representative for U.S. Rep. Robert E. Andrews. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Rutgers University.

As director, DeAndrea will lead the company's government affairs strategy, supporting engagement with policymakers and stakeholders across New Jersey.

James has been with New Jersey American Water since 2020, previously serving as manager of Government Affairs. In her new role, she will focus on government and stakeholder engagement in central and northern New Jersey. She also continues to serve as chairwoman of the New Jersey American Water Employee Political Action Committee. Before joining the company, James held leadership roles for the then-Senate President Pro Tempore, including chief of staff and district office director. She holds a Master of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a bachelor's degree in political science from Howard University.

"Fred and Sakeema bring extensive experience working with elected officials, regulators and community stakeholders, as well as a strong understanding of New Jersey's political and business landscape," said Kimberly Schalek Downes, vice president of Business Development, Government and External Affairs for New Jersey American Water.
