Evofem adds second manufacturer for Phexx, targets 40% cost cut

September 23, 2026 4:05 PM EDT

Evofem Biosciences (OTCID: EVFM) has contracted with a second pharmaceutical manufacturer to produce its prescription contraceptive vaginal gel Phexx, according to a company press release.

The San Diego-based company said the additional manufacturing source is expected to reduce unit costs by 40% or more and improve supply chain flexibility, subject to regulatory approval. The new manufacturer is intended to complement Evofem's existing manufacturing operations rather than replace them.

Evofem expects to submit a supplemental new drug application (sNDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in mid-2027 for Phexx produced at the additional facility. Commercial sales from the second supply source would begin following FDA approval.

Chief Executive Officer Saundra Pelletier said the move is aimed at supporting anticipated demand in both U.S. and international markets. "The addition of a second qualified manufacturing partner for Phexx enhances our supply chain flexibility and provides additional capacity to support anticipated demand in the United States and international markets," she said.

Phexx, which contains lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate, is a hormone-free, on-demand contraceptive gel. Evofem also markets Solosec, an oral antibiotic for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.
