Sunrun (NASDAQ: RUN) and SPAN announced an expanded partnership on Sept. 23, 2026, combining residential solar and battery storage systems with SPAN's distributed data center technology to deploy AI compute capacity in new home communities.
Under the agreement, Sunrun will supply solar and battery storage systems to power SPAN's XFRA distributed compute nodes, which use liquid-cooled Nvidia GPUs managed through SPAN's XFRA Secure Orchestration Layer. The companies plan to begin deployments in new residential construction communities in Texas and other specified markets, working alongside homebuilders.
Homeowners will receive a smart electrical panel, a multi-battery storage and solar system through a pre-paid lease, and whole-home backup power at no cost to the builder or buyer, without increasing the home's purchase price. Customers will also receive ongoing compensation for hosting an XFRA compute node.
"This partnership expansion with SPAN puts customers first, ensuring that they directly benefit in multiple ways from their participation in this powerful distributed AI solution," said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell.
SPAN CEO Arch Rao said the partnership addresses a core constraint for distributed AI compute. "We can now drastically increase our penetration of XFRA compute nodes by pairing them with Sunrun energy systems to deliver cost-effective AI compute capacity at unprecedented speed while also reducing compute cost for certain AI applications."
Sunrun said it will also enroll the home batteries in its existing grid services programs. The companies said the arrangement is intended to avoid overloading local distribution infrastructure while enabling faster deployment compared to traditional data centers.
