Moleculin Biotech, Inc. (NASDAQ: MBRX) announced that the Mexican Patent Office has granted Patent No. 436849 for the company's lung-targeted liposomal Annamycin formulation, valid through November 23, 2040.
The patent covers Moleculin's proprietary liposomal formulation of Annamycin, an anthracycline designed to avoid multidrug resistance mechanisms and deliver the drug to pulmonary tumors and metastatic disease in the lungs. The company states the formulation is engineered to penetrate tissues that are difficult to treat with conventional anthracyclines.
Walter Klemp, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Moleculin, said: "As we continue advancing the MIRACLE trial toward important clinical milestones, we are simultaneously protecting the long-term value of Annamycin through an expanding international patent portfolio."
The Mexican grant adds to Moleculin's existing international patent portfolio covering Annamycin and its formulations across multiple jurisdictions. Annamycin is currently being evaluated in the company's pivotal MIRACLE trial, a Phase 2/3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study assessing Annamycin in combination with cytarabine for patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia.
Moleculin is also developing Annamycin for soft tissue sarcoma lung metastases. The company is a Phase 3 clinical-stage pharmaceutical firm based in Houston.
